Abortion Safer Than Giving Birth

So says a study mentioned in this article from Reuters.

Getting a legal abortion is much safer than giving birth, suggests a new U.S. study published Monday.

Researchers found that women were about 14 times more likely to die during or after giving birth to a live baby than to die from complications of an abortion.

Experts say the findings, though not unexpected, contradict some state laws that suggest abortions are high-risk procedures.

It’s not safe for the baby.

  1. Justin Hoffer Says:

My views on abortion are… well, even I call them morbid.

I view the unborn child as a life. I also recognize that there are certain circumstances where abortion should really be in the hands of the mother. These are rare circumstances, but they do occur. Rape, incest, and medical reasons.

On the other hand, I’ve also read Freakonomics. It turns out the drop in crime rate can be directly linked to the legalization of abortion. Further, abortions are typically done by left wingers, and people tend to (though not always) have the same beliefs as their parents.

  2. David Hoffman Says:

I read Freakonomics too. I think the authors made a good case, but I am not completely convinced. There are a lot of other factors, better policing techniques, longer sentences, even increased number of states that issue concealed carry permits, that also contributed.
James Taranto, who writes the Best of the Web column for the Wall Street Journal calls the tendency for people who are more liberal to have abortions the “Roe Effect”.
