Guess Who’s in New York

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, President of Iran
Image via Wikipedia

It seems that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived in New York yesterday to attend the opening of the United Nations General Assembly session. I wonder if Hitler ever attended any functions at the League of Nations.

This is a good reason why the UN needs to be located somewhere else. I propose Antarctica.

Roger Simon asks if we should kidnap him.

For years, I have read rumors that a young Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was among the kidnappers of the Americans at our Tehran embassy in 1980, back in the halcyon days of the Islamic revolution when Khomeini’s eager devotees scraped makeup from women’s faces with razor blades. (Oh, wait a minute. I guess they’re still doing it.)

I don’t know whether those rumors are true, but it’s hard to disbelieve them entirely, given the subsequent activities and pronouncements of the Iranian president. So it was with little surprise I read the news that the two American hikers on trial in Tehran have just been released in time for Ahmadinejad’s arrival in New York. Perhaps there was some fear (projection?) that we would snatch the Iranian despot before he had time to leave our shores and incarcerate him on Rikers Island or maybe reopen Alcatraz. (Gitmo would be out, I suppose, because Eric Holder has promised to shut it down before the election… assuming Obama doesn’t dump the AG first.)

Sounds good to me.

Bird Safe Buildings

From USA Today. It is nice to know that with all the problems in this country, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors is working on what’s really important, making sure that birds don’t fly into buildings.

An ordinance approved Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors requires that new buildings in parts of the city use “bird-safe” standards that reduce the risk of winged creatures hitting panes of glass.

Advocates say that hundreds of millions of birds die each year after flying into glass windows or walls in the USA, and that San Francisco’s action will boost efforts to encourage bird-safe buildings nationally.

“It’s a global problem,” says Christine Sheppard, bird collisions campaign manager for the American Bird Conservancy. “Everywhere you find glass, you will find dead birds. One of the reasons that people don’t recognize it is a problem is that it is so widely distributed. There are some buildings that kill thousands of birds a year.”

Transparent and reflective glass both pose a threat to migratory and local birds, Sheppard says. Birds don’t see glass or recognize it as a barrier and think they are flying to vegetation they see through the window or in a reflection, she says.

Marking windows with dots or other designs, or shielding the glass with screens or other architectural devices, can reduce fatal accidents, Sheppard says.

Isn’t this something that evolution should take care of? I mean the birds that can’t see the glass will kill themselves while the birds that can will live on to reproduce and improve the various species. Natural selection and survival of the fittest in action.

Saudi Arabia Beheads Sudanese Sorcerer

This is why I think we need to start drilling anywhere and everywhere for oil, not to mention building nuclear power plants everywhere we can.

Saudi Arabia beheaded a Sudanese man by sword in the western city of Medina on Monday after he was convicted of practicing sorcery, the Interior Ministry announced.

Abdul Hamid al-Fakki “practiced witchcraft and sorcery,” which are illegal under Saudi Arabia’s Islamic sharia law, said a ministry statement carried by state news agency SPA.

In October last year, Amnesty International said it had appealed to King Abdullah in a letter to commute Fakki’s death sentence.

His execution brings to 42 the number of people beheaded in Saudi Arabia this year, according to an AFP tally based on official and human rights group reports.

In June, London-based watchdog Amnesty International called on Saudi Arabia to stop applying the death penalty, saying there had been a significant rise in the number of executions in the previous six weeks.

It said 15 people were executed in May alone.

Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under Saudi Arabia’s strict interpretation of Islamic sharia law.

I’m for anything that will reduce these clowns’ geopolitical significance to that of Burkina Faso’s

Thanks to Jihad Watch for their tireless efforts.

She had better not fly her broom over Saudi Arabia

Desparate Donkeys

From the e-mail I have been getting, I think the Democrats are starting to be a little worried about their prospects in the next election.

Let me sum up this week for you:

President Obama: JOBS, JOBS, JOBS.
The Republican Party: NO, NO, NO.

President Obama presented his plan. The only plan Republicans have put forward is to say no to President Obama and yes to big corporations calling the shots, undermining the social safety net we pay for with our taxes, and, if you get sick: you’re on your own. In short: their plan is an assault on our values.

Their vision is dangerous – and we’re in danger of it becoming reality if Republicans flip just FOUR Senate seats in 2012. We can’t let that happen.

That’s why the DSCC needs your help to raise $585,000 before Sept. 30 so we can make sure Democrats don’t lose races that we can win. We literally can’t afford to fall short.

Please give $5, $10 or whatever you can give to the DSCC right now. The DSCC has only 10 days to raise $585,000 and fight the GOP’s assault on our values.

Rick Perry calls Social Security a “Ponzi scheme” and Mitt Romney compares it to a criminal enterprise. And now one GOP Congressman is complaining that President Obama’s plan would force him to live on just $400,000 a year.  Once again the GOP just doesn’t understand the challenges Americans are facing today.

2012 will decide whether we focus on creating jobs, like Democrats want, or protecting millionaires and big corporations, like Republicans demand. We can win.  But we need your help.

Please give $5, $10 or whatever you can give to the DSCC right now. The DSCC has only 10 days to raise $585,000 and fight the GOP’s assault on our values.

There are many reasons we’re Democrats. But perhaps one of the most important is this: We know that a strong middle class makes our country stronger.  Thanks for joining me to fight for what we believe in.

Karen Finney

How punishing millionaires and big corporations is going bring more jobs is beyond me. And, Social Security is indeed a ponzi scheme. The sooner we admit it, the sooner we can fix it. I don’t think raising $585,000 is going to help them all that much. the problem isn’t communication. the problem is that their ideas have been tried and they just don’t work.
